Visitor Visa

Canada is widely known for its breathtaking natural beauty. With vast forests, countless waterfalls, stunning lakes, and remarkable wildlife, it has become one of the most attractive destinations for travelers around the world.

Beyond tourism, many people also visit Canada to see family and friends, or to attend business meetings, conferences, and special events. However, to enter Canada for these purposes, you must first obtain a Canadian visitor visa.

A Canadian visitor visa is generally issued in three categories: single-entry visa, multiple-entry visa, and transit visa.

One important point to keep in mind is that, in most cases, each entry allows you to stay in Canada for up to six months. However, the border officer may decide to grant a shorter stay upon your arrival. In that case, the departure date will be clearly stamped in your passport, and you must leave Canada by that date.

If you wish to stay longer than your permitted period, you must apply to extend your stay at least thirty days before your current status expires.

Types of Canadian Visitor Visas

Single-Entry Visa

This visa allows you to enter Canada only one time. Once you leave Canada, you will need a new visa to re-enter, except in specific cases of travel to the United States or St. Pierre and Miquelon under certain conditions.

Multiple-Entry Visa

This is the most common type of visitor visa. It allows you to enter and leave Canada multiple times during the validity period of the visa. Each stay is usually allowed for up to six months per entry, unless otherwise determined by the border officer.

Transit Visa

This visa is required if you are passing through Canada on your way to another country and your layover is short. It allows you to stay in Canada for up to 48 hours while in transit.

Super Visa (Parents and Grandparents Visa)

The Super Visa is a special type of long-term visitor visa designed for parents and grandparents of Canadian citizens and permanent residents. It allows families to stay connected for extended periods without the need for frequent visa renewals. A Super Visa may be issued for up to 10 years and can allow stays of up to 5 years at a time per entry.

Unlike a regular visitor visa, the Super Visa offers much longer stays and greater flexibility, making it an ideal option for families who want extended time together in Canada.

Recent updates to the Super Visa program have made the financial eligibility requirements more flexible for many families. As of March 31, 2026, hosts in Canada may now use income from either of the two most recent tax years to meet the minimum income requirement. In certain situations, applicants may also combine their own income with the income of their child or grandchild in Canada to satisfy the financial requirement. These changes can help more families qualify for the program and reunite with their loved ones in Canada.

Applicants must still meet all other Super Visa requirements, including obtaining eligible medical insurance coverage and completing an immigration medical examination if required. Another important update is that Super Visa applicants may now use medical insurance issued by approved insurance companies outside Canada, provided the insurer is authorized under Canadian regulations.
